Fig. 11.5. Graphical view of a three intermediary promise chain. the promises in rectangular boxes along the chain move down the chain from server S to proxy P3 handing over the service itself. The oval promises are directed back up the chain providing delivery assurances. Finally, each agent promises independently with the end-point or client that it is an authorized agent for delivering the promise from the source (server).
It might seem surprising just how many promises are documented here. What is the difference between this and a chain of relative pushes as in section 11.3.1? In section 11.3.1, each agent merely throws a task ‘over the wall’ the next agent (this is sometimes called ‘fire and forget’). In the approach here, each agent in the collaboration ensures continuity of its task so that errors can be repaired and the service can be maintained. Thus this chain applies to both one-off delivery of a package and continuous delivery of a service, such as network traffic.
This example represents the extreme end of obtaining maximum certainty through signalling of intent. For continuous delivery scenarios, this represents the minimum level of assurance for a process to be fully managed.
